Beerthoven 360: Sacred and Profane

Music for brass quintet will be played on the doorstep of this historic Austin landmark, viewable live and virtually.

About this Event

Beerthoven is partnering once again with Neill-Cochran House Museum to produce a program entitled Sacred and Profane.

The Museum's current exhibit, If These Walls Could Talk, explores the history of segregation and slavery in Austin, including the City's last remaining structure that was built by enslaved peoples. Through the use of porcelain sculpture pieces that reference sacred art as well as mundane and seemingly commonplace items, the exhibit tells a moving story with disarming wit and beauty.

In reflection of the exhibit, our musical program will explore sacred and non-sacred music for brass quintet, featuring works by composers of color such as "Sacred and Profane" by George Walker and "Escapades" by local composer David Wilborn. The program will also feature music by Bach, Gabrieli, Duke Ellington, and more. The brass quintet will be led by returning Beerthoven artist Martin McCain on bass trombone. Other performers will include trumpeters Micah Killion and Michael Piccione, Paul Blackstone on french horn, and Javier Stuppard on trombone.

In addition to the concert performance, which includes free beer from Lazarus Brewing, attendees will be allowed free access to the Neill-Cochran House Museum at any time following their ticket purchase during museum hours, including the days leading up to and the days following the performance. Three live performances will take place for a small audience outdoors on the lawn of the Neill-Cochran House (maximum of 25 guests). Households of 3+ will be offered a large round table to sit at. Single and paired ticket purchases will have a smaller table to set their drinks on.

In order to provide a safe and seamless check-in process, on-site/at-the-door tickets will not be available. Tickets will only be available for advance purchase. Sales will be suspended four hours before the given program (e.g. 3:30 pm on Friday, 12 pm on Saturday and Sunday).

More safety information is available on our ticketing site.
